今年の12/8は真珠湾攻撃から80年目の節目となります。これに合わせてハワイのPacific Histrric Parksなどが、イベント「Beyond Pearl Harbor」を主催し、戦争の意味を問うシンポジウム や教育映画の公開などを行います。また、戦争の記憶、断絶との和解などをテーマとした映画祭「Beyond Pearl Harbor Film Festival」も特別プログラムとして開催されます。
この映画祭の中で、横須賀で1947 年に米兵と見られる父親と日本人女性の間に生まれ、1953年に養子縁組で渡米した木川洋子さん（英語名：バーバラ・マウントキャッスルさん）の実の母探しの旅を映像化したドキュメンタリー映画「Yokosuka1953」（監督：木川剛志 和歌山大学観光学部教授）が上映作品の一つと選ばれました。
プログラム担当者は選んだ理由を以下のように述べています。
“We felt the story of reconciliation and remembrance that is told through your film is an important and lesser known narrative that should be included in this program.”
「あなたの作品を通して語られる和解と記憶の物語は、このプログラムに含まれるべきと感じました。これは今まで知られてこなかった、大切な物語です」

A half-Japanese woman named Yoko was born in Yokosuka during the turmoil of postwar Japan to an American father and Japanese mother. Yoko was put up for adoption and sent to be raised in the United States. Although she hadn’t heard from her mother in more than 60 years, Yoko never gave up hope for reuniting with her. After contacting Japanese filmmaker Tsuyoshi Kigawa who shares the same surname as her mother, the two begin an unlikely friendship as Yoko travels to Japan in search of her mother’s whereabouts.
